Waterfowl and Shorebirds (8/66)

American White Pelicans (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos) like to come together in groups of a handful of birds or so to feed, as they can thus cooperate and chase fish to one another. During their May breeding season, in Yellowstone and elsewhere, their enormous orange bills produce a laterally flattened horn on the upper mandible. Here they are all preening and it looks like the party is on! Above LeHardy Rapids, Yellowstone River, Yellowstone.
