The Dusky Grouse (Dendragapus obscurus) is a species of forest-dwelling grouse native to the Rocky Mountains. It is closely related to the Sooty Grouse (Dendragapus fuliginosus), and the two were previously considered a single species, the Blue Grouse. The Sooty has yellow sack rather than red. <br />
Air pumping through the sacks produces a very soft drumming sound. The softness of the sound makes the cocks difficult to locate. They are often closer to you than the sound would imply. When the cocks are not displaying, the tail is down and sacks closed. Petrified Tree, Yellowstone.
