This elk (Cervus canadensis) calf is probably a day or two old. Mom has wandered off to feed and he/she must fend for itself until she returns. This calf will lose its spots by the end of summer. After two weeks, calves are able to join the herd, and should be fully weaned at two months of age. Gibbon Canyon, Yellowstone.
