The red Chugwater formation on the Two Dot Ranch in northwestern Wyoming is a dramatic contrast to the greenery around it. The red is the result of oxidation of iron minerals in the rock. The white cap is gypsum. This butte and others like it in the vicinity are classic example of the Chugwater formation dating back to before the Jurassic period of the dinosaurs 250 million years ago.
