Late September in Yellowstone is mating season for the elk (Cervus canadensis). Males (bulls) produce a melodic sound from their throats called a bugle which can be heard for miles. Females (cows) are attracted to the males that bugle more often and have the loudest call. The bugle also serves as a challenge to other bulls in the area. Bulls will fight to defend their harems. This bull is checking the invisible boundary of his territory for potential intruders. Madison Junction, Yellowstone.
